Social Media and Professional Development

Many people utilize Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter, but it is important to know that activity on these platforms can have real-life career implications. For these reasons, auditing your online presence and staying up to date on trends is particularly important.

Conduct an Audit of Your Social Media

Finding employment through social networks is not as far-fetched of an idea as it may sound. A study by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) states that 84% of organizations currently use social media for recruitment efforts. This statistic highlights the importance of ensuring your profiles are employer-friendly.

Before you post to Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, it is important to ask yourself if the content aligns with your professional values. Does it contain negative comments about past employers? Does it portray illegal or explicit activity? Items like these may put your candidacy in jeopardy.

Platforms like Twitter show not only user-generated posts, but liked posts as well. This content is just as important to monitor as content you have produced yourself.

Social Media Checklist

Here’s a checklist that can help you evaluate the professionalism of your social media.

Using Social Media to Find a Job

Social media may not be the first place candidates would consider for career development, but these platforms offer many exciting opportunities if you know where to look.

LinkedIn is undoubtedly the most popular social network for networking. Users can list professional experience, showcase their portfolios, and share career updates with their connections. LinkedIn also allows companies to list job openings and provides an application portal directly through the website.

Facebook is a platform that often goes overlooked for professional opportunities. Many universities have Facebook groups for job-seeking graduates. These communities offer excellent networking opportunities with alumni in your field. After reviewing your Facebook profile, make sure to join and actively participate in these groups. There are also many industry-specific groups that share job opportunities and advice on the platform.

Social media is an ever-changing landscape, and even unexpected platforms like TikTok offer opportunities for professional growth. We recently wrote an industry update about TikTok resumes, a creative way for candidates to showcase their qualifications. Staying on top of these trends and offerings provides helpful opportunities for career growth.
